THE ONE WITH ALL THE WAITING

By Sarah

[This has happened: Rachel found out about Ross and the Xerox-girl, and they have had the fight.]

[Scene: Guys apartment. Chandler and Rachel sit in the armchairs. Joey sits on the kitchen desk.]

RACHEL: I’ll never figure you guys out… One second he says he loves me more than anyone else, and the next he sleeps with some chick from a stupid copy-place.

CHANDLER: Not every man’s like that.

RACHEL: Joey is.

JOEY: Hey! [First angry, but then smiling] Yeah, I am!

CHANDLER: But Joey’s Joey…

RACHEL: Yeah, but still. I didn’t think Ross was like that. I really thought we were gonna be together forever.

CHANDLER: Yeah, we all did. It’s strange… It seems like you two belong together, but somehow there’s always something getting in between. What are you gonna do?

RACHEL: I’m not sure… I don’t know if I can forgive him. I can’t stop picturing him with her. And his hands on her…[a tear runs down her face.] Things will never be the same again.

[The door opens and Ross comes in. Rachel wipes her tears and rises to walk away, but Ross stands in her way.]

ROSS: Rach, we have to talk. Please don’t walk away…

[She stops in front of him and looks down on the floor.]

CHANDLER: Well, I think I heard Monica call for us, Joe.

[Chandler walks up to the door, but stops when he realizes Joey still is sitting looking at Ross and Rachel.]

CHANDLER: Joey!

JOEY: Aw! [Looks disappointed not being allowed to stay, but walks out behind Chandler.]

RACHEL: Ross, I don’t wanna fight any more. I don’t have the strength.

ROSS: I don’t wanna fight either, but I can’t leave it where we left it yesterday. Listen to me, it was a mistake…

RACHEL: I’ve heard that so many times. You have to realize it’s over.

ROSS: We had something special. We can’t just throw it away.

RACHEL: No, we didn’t throw it away, you did! [She turns around and walks up to the door.] You slept with that other girl. You messed up…

[She walks over to her apartment. Ross follows her. They go inside, getting pretty loud]

ROSS: We were on a break!

CHANDLER: Oh, no…

RACHEL: And right after we decided that, you go sleep with some girl you’ve known for fifteen minutes! We never broke up… It was just a break!

ROSS: I was confused. And when I heard Mark being here…

RACHEL: I never slept with him.

ROSS: But how could I know?

RACHEL: Ok. So, if I had slept with him everything would be all right? You sleep with one, and I sleep with another. Yeah, that sounds great!

ROSS: No, I didn’t mean it like that.

RACHEL: You know what? I’ll go and try to find someone to make it up with straight away.

[She takes her jacket and rushes off, followed by Ross.]

[Cut to the street outside the building. Rachel comes out from door, but Ross comes after and takes her arm.]

RACHEL: Let me go!

ROSS: Rach, don’t do it!

RACHEL: I’ll do what I want.

ROSS: Please, don’t redo my mistake…

[She looks at him, then turns around and walks out on the street to get a cab.]

ROSS: Rachel! Look out!

[She turns around, but doesn’t see the car coming towards her before it’s too late.]

[Cut to the girls apartment. Monica, Phoebe, Chandler and Joey sits by the table when they here a loud noise from the street. Monica goes out on the balcony to see what’s happening, but soon comes back with a terrified look on her face.]

MONICA: Omigod… Rachel got hit by a car…

[Cut to a hospital. Ross, who came by a police car, walks around alone in a waiting room.

The others comes running.]

MONICA: Where is she? How’s she doing? Omigod…

ROSS: They are examining her now. All they have said is that she was unconscious all the way in the ambulance. Mon, it’s all my fault…

PHOEBE: How did it all happen?

ROSS: We were arguing, once again about me sleeping with that girl. And she got mad and ran out on the street… And she didn’t… It was too late…

[He sits down and hides his face in his hands. The others sit around him, noone is saying anything.]

[Time lapse. After an hour a doctor comes into the room. The gang stands up as he walks up to them.]

DOCTOR: Ross Geller?

ROSS: Yes? How is she?

DOCTOR: They’re still working on her, but it doesn’t look very good. She got a hard blow against her head, and her brain swelled a lot. We had to put her in a respirator to let her brain rest.

MONICA: Will she live?

DOCTOR: We’ll try to take the respirator away when it looks stabile, and then hopefully she will wake up.

CHANDLER: What are her chances?

DOCTOR: It’s hard to say now, but she probably have to lie in coma at least a week…

MONICA: But otherwise she’s okay?

DOCTOR: Well, she has a couple of broken ribs, a broken arm, and she’s pretty bruised. But that will heal.

ROSS: Can I see her?

DOCTOR: Yes, but only you.

[They walk away and into a room. Everything looks very sterile and in the middle of the room is the bed where Rachel lies. She’s attached to all sorts of machines and monitors, and a nurse is controlling that everything’s ok.]

DOCTOR: We’ll leave you alone a while…

[They walk away and Ross stands in front of the bed. He’s looking around and you can see he’s bothered by the persistent sounds from the machines. He sits down on a chair beside the bed and takes Rachel’s hand.]

[“Tears In Heaven” by Eric Clapton starts playing.]

Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand if I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand if I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven.

ROSS: I’m sorry… I don’t know if you can here me or not, but I’ll talk to you anyway. Why did this have to happen? I love you more than anything, still you’re the one I’ve hurt the most. I’ll never forgive myself for this… I can’t stand being myself, knowing I’m the reason you’re here right now. Rach, please wake up…

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven.

[A week later. The girls apartment. Everyone’s there, except Rachel of course. Ross looks really depressed.]

MONICA: It seems like it has been an eternity since it happened…

PHOEBE: I know, but I still can’t believe it.

JOEY: It’s just really empty here. I miss her…

CHANDLER: Yeah, we all do.

[The phone rings and Monica picks it up.]

MONICA: Yeah, sure. We’ll be there soon. [Hangs up.] They’re gonna take her off the respirator now…

[Cut to the hospital. The gang is in the waiting room when the doctor from the last time comes out to them.]

DOCTOR: Ok, she’s off the life-support now.

ROSS: How is she?

DOCTOR: We can’t tell yet. It’ll take at least an hour before we can tell if she’s gonna be fine, but something that shows us she’s not making it without life-support can happen any time, so we have to keep her monitored.

CHANDLER: Can we see her?

DOCTOR: Sure, just keep it down…

[They walk into a room and sits down on the bed where Rachel’s laying.]

MONICA: Come on, Rach. Wake up…

PHOEBE: Sorry… I can’t stand it… I can’t be here…

JOEY: I can go down with you to the cafeteria, Phoebs.

PHOEBE: You can?

JOEY: Sure, just let us know when anything happens.

CHANDLER: We will.

PHOEBE: I’m so sorry… I can’t wait here watching her like that, it hurts too much.

MONICA: It’s ok, Phoebe.

[Joey and Phoebe walk away. The others gather around the bed. Chandler lays his hands on Monica’s shoulders, and Ross takes Rachel’s hand.]

[Time laps and after two hours nothing’s changed. Ross walks back and forward, and Chandler and Monica are sitting on two chairs.]

ROSS: Why isn’t anything happening? Why isn’t she awake?

MONICA: The doctor said it could take time… Don’t worry. She’ll wake up.

ROSS: How can I not worry? It’s my fault she’s laying there at all. I’d do anything to switch places with her. She doesn’t deserve this.

MONICA: No, she doesn’t deserve this, but there’s nothing you can do.

[Ross walks up to the bed, sits down on a chair beside it and takes Rachel’s hand.]

ROSS: This is it, Rach… You have to wake up. I can’t go on without you…

[He kisses her hand and buries his face iher blanket. You can see Rachel’s hand move.]

RACHEL: Ross…

[He looks up to find Rachel awake. Monica and Chandler rise and walk up to the bed.]

ROSS: I’m here, Rach.

CHANDLER: Welcome back, we’ve missed you.

MONICA: I’ll get the doctor…

[Soon, the doctor, Phoebe and Joey’s there. The doctor’s examining Rachel.]

DOCTOR: Well, Miss Green. You gave us a scare, but you’re gonna be just fine… Now, I’ll leave you alone.

ROSS: Guys, can we be alone for a moment?

MONICA: Sure.

[They walk away, and Ross sits down beside the bed.]

RACHEL: Ross…

ROSS: Please, let me talk. I understand if you don’t want anything to do with me, I know I’ve messed up. But you have to know that I love you, and nothing, nothing will ever change that.

RACHEL: Ross…

ROSS: I know it’s my fault you’re here, and I would do anything to change places, but I can’t. All I can do is to tell you that you’ll always be in my heart…

RACHEL: Ross, listen, I love you…

ROSS: What?

RACHEL: I know we have some tuff things to deal with, but that don’t stop me from loving you. Nothing will…

ROSS: But…

RACHEL: No, I never stopped loving you. You see, in the end love wins…

[They meet in a deep kiss, and “The Reason” by Céline Dion starts playing]

I figured it out
I was high and low and everything in between
I was wicked and wild, baby, you know what I mean
Till there was you, yeah, you

Something went wrong
I made a deal with the devil for an empty I.O.U.
Been to hell and back, but an angel was looking through
It was you, yeah, you
It's all because of you

You are the reason
You are the reason I wake up every day
And sleep through the night
You are the reason, the reason
